The Colour Families

I used to find myself frequently wondering, “What colour would be best for this card?” Or perhaps something like, “What colour should I get that would be most versatile for me?”

The answers for these questions are going to change from person to person. So here’s an idea: first try getting the packs of card stock that contain two sheets of each colour from a particular colour family. The packs are only $8.50 each and you get 20 sheets of 8 1/2″ x 11″ card stock. “What’s a colour family?” you ask. Here’s a picture to show what a “colour family” is…

DSC_0477

There are four families: subtles, brights, regals and neutrals. There are ten colours in each of the families. (Not all colours are shown)

This wonderful idea that I came up with came at a bit of a cost. I thought I knew right away what colours I would love, so I got them. As it turns out, there were a few that I really didn’t like as much as I thought I would. So I spent more money and got more colours.

If I had just gotten the packs of card stock that came with two of each colour, I could have seen how much I loved one colour over another. I would have saved money by only getting the full packs of the colours I knew I would use a lot of.

Also, this way, I would have at least two sheets of card stock of every colour. So if I suddenly wanted a colour that I rarely used, I would have had it.

Another great way to figure out what colours you are going to use the most is to look at the card ideas in each of the Stampin’ Up! catalogues. You can see on every page how colours are used. Tag each page that you like the colours on (even if you don’t like the cards), and then see what colours show up the most on those pages.

Here’s a closer look at each of those cards and a list of all the colours in each family.

Stamps For the Beginner

I recently did a party where there was some people who had never done stamping before. I guess I’m not used to that because when one of them asked me, “What would you recommend?” I was at a total loss on what to suggest. So I decided it was time for me to put together a “beginner” list.

These are some stamp sets that I can see as holding their own. They come with sayings that are usable for multiple occasions, and some designs or pictures that can be used to make nice backgrounds or decorations. These are just from the main 2013 – 2014 catalogue. The prices and links are for the wood mount sets. The clear mount sets would be cheaper, you just need a clear block.

Hello Lovely $40.95

Oh, Hello $31.95

Blooming with Kindness $27.95

Too Kind $24.95

Wetlands $26.95

A Fitting Occasion $46.95

These are two sets that I think have a lot of versatility. One is more feminine and then other more masculine. Pick one, or both, of these, add one set that is of all greetings, and you are good to go for a long time.

Clockworks $28.95

Everything Eleanor $44.95

A Paper Bow

How to make a paper bow.

DSC_0331

Supplies you will need:

  •  a long strip of paper
  •  paper snips
  •  snail adhesive
  •  Some kind of embellishment (optional)

DSC_0315

Step One: If you are using thinker card stock, run the strip through your fingers a few times. This helps to break up the fibers of the paper and will help reduce unwanted creases or folds. Your paper will have a slight curl to it after. DSC_0317DSC_0318

Step Two: Start at one end of the strip. This will be the center top of the bow. Loop the paper back on itself twice to make the top loops of the bow.DSC_0320

Loop the paper two more times making larger loops for the bottom two loops of the bow.

DSC_0322

Cut off excess paper.

DSC_0323

Step Three: Apply some snail adhesive to the centre of each layer of paper to hold it in place.

DSC_0324DSC_0326

Step Four: Cut v’s on either side of another strip of paper for the “tails” that the bow will sit on.

DSC_0327

Attach to the bottom of the bow.  DSC_0328

Step Five: Wrap your last peace of paper around the centre of the bow, cutting off any excess there may be.

DSC_0329

Attach it at the bottom.

DSC_0331

Step Six: Add what ever embellishment you like to the bow.

Note: I used one long strip of paper and just kept using the  excess bits for the next step. If you don’t have enough excess paper to do this, just grab another small strip that is the same width as the strip you are using.

Here are two examples of how I used this bow this past Christmas.DSC_0332DSC_0952

I also like the idea of using it to “tie” the stems of flowers together on a spring card. Or simply to have embellish the side of something that needs a little extra dimension.

Hope you have fun trying this out.

Please post comments or questions you have about this technique. I will do my best to answer them.

Who am I?

I never really know what to tell people when they say, “So tell me a bit about you.” I’m left with questions like, “What do you want to know? Things like I can put both of my feet behind my head, or things like I graduated University with a Major in Drama and a minor in Mathematics?”

“Or do you want to know more of the family things, like I’m married and have almost three kids?” I’m pregnant at the moment. I have a month and a half left to go. I’m really ready for this child to be born.

Usually when people see that I’m pregnant they go into the questions, “How far along are you? Is it a boy or a girl? Is this your first?” My answer, “I don’t really know how far along I am, I’m not one of those people who keeps track. Yes it’s a boy or a girl. No this is not my first and don’t look at me like that, I’m older then you think I am. I’m just a very small person.”

So, in summery, I am a wife, a mother, a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator, a math tutor, a light designer, a photographer, and when I have a moment, I have a retail job too.

More V-Day cards

So I did some more cards.

First, the “Love” card. I did the spots with a sponge dauber. The Cherry Cobbler paper in the back is actually two toned paper. Put it though the big shot and then sand off the top layer, and you get two tones of red making a beautiful border.

The birds were so much easier then I thought they would be. I thought they turned out really good for how simple it was. All done with the bird punch.
